Connecticut College Native American Heritage Month Kickoff

The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation (EPTN) has been working with Connecticut College in various collaborative efforts, including a joint sociology course, for the past two years. On November 10th, 2014 members of the EPTN will serve as both keynote speakers and panelists in the school’s Native American Heritage Month Kickoff event starting at 4:00 PM in the Cro Student Center 1941 room.

EPTN Corresponding Secretary Katherine Sebastian-Dring and UMass Boston Associate Professor of Women’s Studies Dr. Amy Den Ouden will speak about the history of Native Americans in New England and, more specifically, New London, CT. A panel discussing Native American oppression, the lack of recognition for native communities, the controversy surrounding native-themed Mascots and other topics related to appropriation vs. appreciation will follow.

The event will be preceded by a Native American Gallery featuring the history of the EPTN at Harris Atrium from 11:00AM – 4:00 PM.
